Die dorpie het ontstaan toe die NG Kerk 'n nuwe gemeente hier gestig en ook 'n dorp geproklameer het in 1906. Die dorp was eers Trichardsfontein genoem, na Carel Trichardt, die oudste seun van Louis Tregardt. Mettertyd is die naam verkort na Trichardt.
