Paleobotanika (rrejdh nga fjalët greke paleo = i vjetër dhe botanikë = studimi i bimëve), është degë e paleontologjisë ose paleobiologjisë që merret me zbulimin dhe identifikimin e mbetejeve të bimëve nga kontekstet gjeologjike dhe përdorimin e tyre për rindërtimin biologjik të mjedisit të shkuar (paleogjeografik), evoluimin dhe historinë e bimëve që kanë pasur influencë në evolucionin e jetës në përgjithësi.
Një sinonim i saj është edhe paleofitologjia.
Paleobotanika përfshin studimin e fosileve të bimëve tokësore, si dhe studimin e fotoautotrofeve prehistorikedetare, të tilla si algat fotosintetike , algat e detit ose leshterikët. Ajo ka një lidhje të ngushtë edhe me fushën e palinologjisë, e cila merret me studimin i sporeve dhe polenit të fosilizuar dhe ekzistuese.
Paleobotanika është e rëndësishëm në rindërtimin e sitemit ekologjik dhe klimës së lashtë, të njohura respektivisht si paleoekologji dhe paleoklimatologji; gjithashtu është themelore për studimin e zhivllimit dhe evolucionin e bimëve të gjelbëra.
Paleobotanika është bërë shumë e rëndësishme edhe në fushën e arkeologjisë, kryesisht për përdorimin e fitoliteve në datimet relative dhe në paleoetnobotanik.
Themelimi i paleobotanisë si një disiplinë shkencore mund të shihet që në fillimet e shekullit të XIX, sidomos në punimet e paleontologut gjermane Ernst Friedrich von Schlotheim, fisnikut dhe studiuesit çek (nga Bohemia) Kaspar Maria von Sternberg dhe botanistit francez Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart.
Bimë fosile quhet ajo pjesë e bimës që është ruajtur për një kohë të gjatë (që nga koha e vdekjes ose tharjes). Të tilla fosile mund të japin përshtypjen se janë prehistorike dhe shumë milion vjeçare të vjetra, ose mund të jenë pjesë e qymyreve që janë vetëm disa qindra vite të vjetra. Bimët prehistorike, janë grupe të ndryshme bimësh që kanë jetuar përpara se të lindet shkrimi ( rreth 3500 para erës sonë).
Grupet fosile të bimëve
Disa bimë kanë mbetur të pandryshuara gjatë gjithë kohës gjeologjike të tokës. Bimë prehistorike të tilla si Ginkgo biloba dhe Sciadopitys verticillata janë të njëjtat sot me ato të gjetura në bimët fosile që kanë jetuar më parë. Ndërsa bimë të tjera, kanë ndryshuar rrënjësisht, ose janë zhdukur tërësisht.
