É a actriz estadounidense que máis candidaturas aos Óscars tivo, sendo nomeada en 21 ocasións e gañándoo en tres.

Traxectoria

É a filla máis vella de Mary e Harry Streep, e dende pequena se sentiu atraída polo mundo do cine e o teatro, participando xa de nena en obras teatrais. Estudou Interpretación no Vassar College, logo no Darmouth College e, posteriormente, na Yale School of Drama, graduándose a mediados dos 70. Nun principio traballou no teatro, sendo nomeada ao premio Tony pola súa interpretación na obra 27 wagons full of cotton. Despois de actuar nun par de telefilmes debutou na gran pantalla en 1977 coa película Julia, de Fred Zinnemann, un filme protagonizado por Vanessa Redgrave e Jane Fonda. Máis tarde aparecerían títulos como O cazador en 1978, película pola que foi candidata a mellor actriz secundaria; Manhattan, en 1979 de Woody Allen. En 1978 casou co escultor Donald Gummer, con quen continúa emparellada.
