Muzikologjia

Departamentet e muzikologjisë tradicionalisht i përkasin shkencave humane, megjithëse hulumtimi i muzikës shpesh është më shkencor në fokus (psikologjik, sociologjik, akustik, neurologjik, etj.). Një studiues që merret me kërkime dhe hulumtime shkencore muzikore në mënyrë profesionale quhet muzikolog .

Muzikologjia tradicionalisht ndahet në tre degë kryesore: 1. muzikologjia historike, 2. muzikologjia sistematike dhe 3. etnomuzikologjia. Muzikologjia historike merret kryesisht me historinë e të ashtuquajturës traditë klasike perëndimore, megjithëse studimi i historisë së muzikës nuk duhet të kufizohet vetëm në atë. Muzikologjia sistematike përfshin teorinë e muzikës, estetikën, pedagogjinë, akustikën muzikore, shkencën dhe teknologjinë e instrumenteve muzikorë dhe implikimet muzikore të fiziologjisë, psikologjisë, sociologjisë, filozofisë dhe informatikës. Etnomuzikologjia është e orientuar më shumë kah antropologjia (veçanërisht kërkimi në terren) për të kuptuar se si dhe pse njerëzit bëjnë muzikë. Muzikologjia konjitive është tërësia e fenomeneve që rrethojnë modelimin njohës të muzikës. Kur muzikologët kryejnë hulumtime duke përdorur kompjuterë, kërkimet e tyre shpesh bien nën fushën e muzikologjisë kompjuterike. Terapia muzikore është një formë e specializuar e muzikologjisë së aplikuar e cila nganjëherë konsiderohet e lidhur më ngushtë me fushat shëndetësore, dhe herë të tjera konsiderohet si pjesë e shkencës së muzikologjisë.
