水母生海中,古人以其以鹹水之渣滓為母,故名水母。鮮煮輒消釋出水,一名海䖳。《南越筆記》謂之曰:「氣最腥,為蟲之所宅。蟲者,蝦也。水母以蝦為浮沉故曰水母目蝦。性冷,能化物,不能自化,脾胃弱者勿食。」乾者曰海蜇,腹下有腳紛紜,名曰蜇花。八月間乾者,肉厚而脆,名八月子,尤美。
