Hau kalkulatzeko, nukleoaren protoi eta neutroi kopurua gehitzen da. A letrarekin adierazten da (pisu atomiko esan nahi duen Atomgewicht aleman hitzetik)
Idaztean elementuaren sinboloaren aurrean, goiindize formatuarekin jar ohi da, atomo-zenbakiaren azpian.
Protoi eta neutroi kopuruaren batura denean oinarrituz, neutroi kopurua kalkulatu daiteke A-Z eginez. Adibidez, zirkonio () atomo batek 40 protoi eta 51 neutroi izango ditu; germanio () atomo batek 32 protoi eta 41 neutroi izango ditu.
Hidrogenoa izan ezik, atomo guztien masa-zenbakia atomo-zenbakiaren bikoitza baino gehiago da.
