沿革
現在
コーネル大学は、設立当初からニューヨーク州におけるランドグラント大学である一方、アイビー・リーグの一校としても名を連ねている。他の科学的および古典的研究を排除し、軍事戦術を含むことなく、農業および機械工芸に関連する学問の分野を、州の立法府がそれぞれ規定するような方法で教え、生活におけるいくつかの追求と職業における産業階級の自由で実践的な教育を促進することを目的に設置された。

スポーツ
コーネル大学のスポーツチームは「コーネル・ビッグ・レッド」と呼ばれている。コーネル大学には30以上のスポーツチームがあり、全米大学体育協会(NCAA)のカンファレンスはアイビー・リーグに所属しているが、アイスホッケーについてはECACホッケー・リーグ(ECAC Hockey League)に所属している。
アイスホッケーは同校で最も人気のあるスポーツの一つであり、冬の風物詩となっている。同校は全米選手権の優勝を2回、フローズン・フォー(全米ベスト4)進出を8回果たしている強豪である。アイスホッケーの長年のライバルはハーバード大学であり、全米でも有名なカレッジアイスホッケーのライバル関係である。
コーネル大学のホームアリーナであるリナーリンク(Lynah Rink)でハーバード大学と対戦する際は、ハーバード大学の選手が入場する際に熱狂的なファンが大量の魚をリンクに投げ入れることが恒例となっている。これは、ハーバード大学が港町(ボストン)にあることを揶揄しているのである。
