It lies north o the ceety o Aiberdeen, in the ceevil pairish o Belhelvie. The lang an wide beach is bordered bi an extensive dune seestem that stretches 14 mile (23 km) frae Aiberdeen tae juist north o the Ythan Estuary at Newburgh. The dunes are a substantial aurie o stable gressland whaur the principal vegetation is marram gress. Thay support a lairge array o wildlife. Twa wattercoorses mak thair way tae the sea within the aurie creating ribbons o wetland vegetation alang thair coorse. The aurie lies within the Saunds o Forvie Steid o Special Scienteefic Interest, the fift lairgest saund dune seestem in Breetain.
