It is locatit in the northwast o the oblast an borders wi Vytegorsky Destrict in the north, Kirillovsky Destrict in the east, an wi Belozersky Destrict in the sooth an wast. The aurie o the destrict is 2,900 square kilometer (1,100 sq mi). Its admeenistrative centre is the landwart locality (a selo) o Lipin Bor. Destrict's population: 8,089 (2010 Census); 10,002 (2002 Census); 11,977 (1989 Census). The population o Lipin Bor accoonts for 45.4% o the destrict's total population.

Accordin tae the Primary Chronicle, Sineus, a brither o Rurik, became the prince o Beloozero in 862. Housomeivver, it is likely that Sineus niver existit. Nivertheless, the airchaeological data show that the dounset existit till the 10t century on the northren shore o the loch, close tae the selo o Kisnema (nou Troitskoye in Vashkinsky Destrict). In the 10t century, it wis transferred tae the ootflow o the Sheksna River. In the 13t century, the aurie wis admeenistered bi princes o Beloozero, an then in the 14t century, it fell unner control o the Grand Duchy o Moscow.

In the course o the admeenistrative reform carriet oot in 1708 by Peter the Great, the aurie wis includit intae Ingermanland Govrenorate (kent syne 1710 as Saunt Petersburg Govrenorate). The admeenistrative centre o the destrict wis establisht in the veelage o Vashki, hence the name o the destrict. On September 23, 1937, Vashkinsky District was transferred to newly established Vologda Oblast. In 1938, the admeenistrative centre o the destrict wis muivit tae the selo o Lipin Bor.

On 1 August 1927, Kovzhinsky Destrict (wi the admeenistrative centre in the selo o Annensky Most) an Sholsky Destrict (wi the admeenistrative centre in the selo o Zubovo) wur establisht an aw.
