Justin Portal Welby (born 6 January 1956) is the 105th and present Archbishop of Canterbury - the most senior bishop in the Church of England.
He replaced Rowan Williams as archbishop in February 2013.
Welby was born at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital in London.His early career was in the oil industry but in 1989, he studied for ordination in Durham, England. After several parochial appointments he became the Dean of Liverpool and was appointed as the Bishop of Durham in 2011.
Welby's theology is reported as representing the evangelical tradition within Anglicanism and he has written about the relationship between finance and religion. On 9 November 2012, it was officially announced that Welby would replace Rowan Williams.
There has been revelations as a result of a released DNA test, showing that, he is in fact the son of Winston Churchill's last private secretary.
In 2018, he talked about how Brexit would be bad for the United Kingdom and how worried he is of its effects.
On 6 May 2023, at the Coronation of Charles III and Camilla, he performed the prayer of ceremory and took St. Edward's Crown from the alter and placed it upon the head of Charles III.
