History

When the Cher department was created on 1800, the arrondissement of Bourges was part of that original department.

Geography

The arrondissement of Bourges is the central arrondissement of the Cher department. It is bordered to the north by the Loiret department, to the east by the Nièvre department, to the south by the Saint-Amand-Montrond arrondissement, to the southwest by the Indre department and to the west by the Vierzon arrondissement.

The arrondissement of Bourges is the largest arrondissement of the department in area, 2,797.8 km2 (1,080.2 sq mi), and the one with more people living in it (173,889 inhabitants).
