フツイマは、コーネル大学を卒業し、ミシガン大学で修士号、1969年に博士号を取得した。研究テーマは、植物を食べる昆虫と植物自体の相互関係だった。ミシガン大学の生態学及び進化生物学の教授を務め、現在はニューヨーク州立大学ストーニーブルック校の生態学と進化学の教授である。

Society for the Study of EvolutionとAmerican Society of Naturalistsの会長、Evolution and the Annual Review of Ecology and Systematicsの編集長を務めた。グッゲンハイムフェロー、フルブライトフェローに選出され、2006年4月25日には、米国科学アカデミーの会員に選ばれた。

American Society of Naturalistsからシューアル・ライト賞を受賞し、2012年には、ドレクセル大学科学アカデミーのライディ賞を受賞した。

著作Evolutionary Biology and Science on Trial: The Case for Evolutionは広く用いられ、創造論と進化論の論争を引き起こした。直近の著書Evolutionは大学生の入門向けで、2005年初めに初版が出版され、2009年には第2版、2013年には第3版が出版された。また、M. SlatkinとCoevolutionを共著した。
