Andrey Zaliznyak: Russian linguist (1935-2017)

Andrey Anatolyevich Zaliznyak (29 April 1935 – 24 December 2017) was a Russian linguist, an expert in historical linguistics and grammar.

He was born in Moscow. He was known for his attention to the popularizing of linguistics and to the struggle against pseudoscience. In 2004, he published a study of the Tale of Igor's Campaign.

Zaliznyak lectured in the Moscow University, University of Geneva, and University of Paris. Zaliznyak's first monograph, Russian Nominal Inflection (1967), remains a definitive study in the field. Ten years later, he published a highly viewed Russian Grammar Dictionary.

Zaliznyak died on 24 December 2017 at the age of 82.
