Stephen Kim Sou-hwan (김수환 født 8.

Stephen Kim Sou-hwan studerte filosofi og katolsk teologi i Tae Gu og i Tokyo, og mottok i 1947 prestevielsens sakrament. Deretter ble han personlig sekretær for biskopen av Tae Gu, menighetsprest, og redaktør av bispedømmets kirkeblad.
I 1966 utnevnte pave Paul VI ham til biskop av Masan. Han ble bispeviet av erkebiskop Antonio del Giudice, internuntius til Sør-Korea; medkonsekratorer var John Baptist Sye Bong-Kil, erkebiskop av Daegu {Taegu}, og John A. Choi Jae-seon, biskop av Busan {Pusan}.
I 1968 ble han utnevnt til erkebiskop av Seoul. Året etter ble han opptatt i kardinalskollegiet.
