Mivart var fra 1874 for noe tid professor i biologi ved University College i London og sekretær for Linnean Society. Hans arbeide On the Genesis of Species (1871) er rettet mot Darwins seleksjonssteori, på samme tid som det fastholder ved descendenslæren.
