Rage Against The Machine

Bandet ble stiftet 1991 og oppløst i 2000. 22. januar 2007 ble det bekreftet at Rage Against the Machine skulle gjenforenes for å holde en konsert på Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival i 2007. I etterkant av denne konserten har bandet hatt flere opptredener. Rage Against the Machines største hit er sangen «Killing in the Name» fra deres selvtitulerte debutalbum.

Rage Against the Machine på Commons

Fra bandet ble stiftet og til de ble oppløst i 2000, ga bandet ut fire studioalbum. I 2001 dannet tre av medlemmene (Morello, Commerford og Wilk) sammen med tidligere Soundgarden-vokalist Chris Cornell bandet Audioslave.

Bandet ble innvotert i Rock and Roll Hall of Fame i 2023.

 

Rage Against the Machine

I 1992 ble bandets debutalbum, som også har blitt bandets best kjente album, Rage Against the Machine, gitt ut. Platen solgte til tre ganger platina av The RIAA. Debutsinglen, «Killing in the Name» ble en stor hit og har blitt en av RATMs mest kjente sanger. Den kom blant annet på 25.-plass på den britiske singellisten. På albumcoveret er det bilde av den vietnamesiske munken Thích Quảng Đức som er kjent for å ha satt fyr på seg selv i Saigon som en protest mot president Ngô Đình Diệm. Det ble gitt ut fire singler fra albumet; «Killing in the Name», «Bombtrack», «Bullet in the Head» og «Freedom».

 

Evil Empire

I 1996 ga RATM ut sitt andre studioalbum Evil Empire. Albumet inneholdt hitsinglen «Bulls on Parade».

The Battle of Los Angeles

The Battle of Los Angeles er Rage Against the Machines tredje studioalbum og kom ut i 1999. Albumet kom fort på 1.-plass på Billboard 200 og det inneholder singlen «Testify» som kom på 3.-plass på listen «Mainstream Rock Tracks» og 4.-plass på «Modern Rock Tracks»-listen. Sangen «Guerrilla Radio» vant en Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance i 2001.

Renegades

Renegades var det fjerde studioalbumet til Rage Against the Machine og det ble gitt ut i 2000. Albumet inneholder coversanger fra forskjellige artister, deriblant artister som Bob Dylan og Bruce Springsteen. Det ble gitt ut i 2000, etter at vokalisten Zack de la Rocha hadde forlatt bandet, men det inneholder likevel hans vokal. Det kom ut to singler fra albumet «Renegades of Funk» og «How I Could Just Kill a Man».

 

Audioslave

Etter at Renegades kom ut, sluttet De la Rocha i bandet for å jobbe med et soloprosjekt. Bandet tok da inn Chris Cornell, den tidligere vokalisten i det kjente grungebandet Soundgarden. Sammen dannet disse fire bandet Audioslave. Audioslave gav ut tre studioalbum. I 2007 forlot Cornell bandet for å jobbe med solostoff. De gjenværende medlemmene kom sammen med Zack de la Rocha, og Rage Against the Machine ble gjenforent.

De la Rocha forlot Rage Against the Machine for å jobbe med eget matriell. Dette er gitt ut med tittelen One Day As A Lion

The Nightwatchman

I 2003 begynte Tom Morello med sitt soloprosjekt som han kalte The Nightwatchman. Soloprosjektet hans ble kjent for politiske tekster. I 2006 kom platen One Mans Revolution ut, uten å oppnå et bra salg.

 

I januar 2007 begynte det å gå rykter om at Rage Against the Machine skulle holde en konsert sammen. 22. januar sa bandet at de skulle gjenforenes på en konsert fordi de ville bruke konserten til å protestere mot George W. Bush. Dette ble starten på omfattende turnévirksomhet.

Morello ble spurt om bandet skulle lage et nytt album sammen, og svarte:

 There are no plans to do that… That's a whole other ball of wax right there. Writing and recording albums is a whole different thing than getting back on the bike (laughs), you know, and playing these songs. But I think that the one thing about the Rage catalog is that to me none of it feels dated. You know, it doesn't feel at all like a nostalgia show. It feels like these are songs that were born and bred to be played now.
