Computing Platform: Environment in which a piece of software is executed

A computing platform is a well defined set of hardware or software that allows application programs to run.

Typical platforms include the hardware architecture, the operating system, as well as runtime libraries. The programming language Java is an example of Software Platform. An example for a hardware platform is SPARC.
