These are urban areas, not towns or cities

Everything with this template is wrong — and it paints a very misleading picture. I don't know who created it, but it doesn't list either cities or towns, like it says it does — instead it lists urban areas. Since it also needs updating I will replace it with accurate numbers on cities and towns as soon as I have time. I may also add metropolitan areas, which are less arbitrary than urban areas. Swedish urban areas are defined differently in different statistical databases, and none of the definitions take into account parks or water — which makes them uniquely ill-suited for basing a template which is used on the main Sweden article upon. Ehm, it seems even more wrong now, it is incredibly misleading. There are not 97,000 people living in Sundsvall, for example. That's the population of the municipality, not the city. Why do you think this is an improvement? Pancake (talk) 17:04, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
I agree with Pancake, municipalities are definitely not closer to "cities or towns" than urban areas. And I have no idea what's arbitrary about urban areas, they are very well defined by SCB, and the definition takes into account parks. – Elisson • T • C • 11:12, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
I changed the numbers from municipality to largest urban area of cities as defined by SKL. Finding the best possible stats is a little difficult, but to call "Sollentuna and Upplands Väsby" a city as in the old template, that's just nowhere near acceptable. Also per that definition "North-western Göteborg" places at 23. That is, beyond the scewed statistics it presents. My preference would be to include both urban area and metropolitan area, I will look into creating an alternative template base.

I created the new base template Template:Largest cities alternative which includes both metropolitan and city areas, as did older versions of this template up until late 2012 when it was changed unilaterally without discussion. Carl Fredrik talk 10:01, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
