This new article is excellent.

Notes

Is it worth adding another column for notes, such as "station became independent (date)"? Tony Holkham (Talk) 10:13, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

    Hi Tony
Replaced "Date Closed" with "RNLI dates" for now - I expect just to put 1894–1922 for example
"Last Lifeboat" was a bad plan. Replaced with "Comments".
Location is maintaining "List of RNLI Stations" format, with Place, County, with a redirect if the place name on wiki includes the county, and then adding the county again!
    So Boulmer, Northumberland
or Whitburn, Tyne and Wear|Whitburn, Tyne and Wear Ojsyork (talk) 13:15, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, Martin. It's coming along nicely. Don't know this place - Llanaelhaiarm - can you identify? T. Tony Holkham (Talk) 13:20, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
Llanaelhaiarm is a ref from the LBES handbook. (typo??)
North of Porthdinllaen, thinking it maybe Llanaelhaearn
Glad to see we have you all motivated again!

        Tony
Just want to say thanks for the contributions so far, (and hopefully more), made in the spirit of collaboration, making positive additions, and not taking what was done last week, and completely changing it just because you can!
I hope there will be an increase in the number of retired station pages now, (I have some planned already), which will go to celebrate/commemorate what was achieved there, even if they've long been closed and forgotten.
Thankyou. Ojsyork (talk) 11:33, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Chichester Harbour

Martin, does the handbook give any hint where exactly this station was? Hayling Island Lifeboat Station is at the entrance to the harbour, but I know of no other station having been in the harbour itself. Tony Holkham (Talk) 12:06, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

    No more info, sorry.
It was gone by the 1890s I think. Ojsyork (talk) 13:09, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Yes, found more info. West Wittering Ojsyork (talk) 20:46, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Did you find a source? Tony Holkham (Talk) 22:13, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Erm, yes, in the handbook after all! MartinOjsyork (talk) 23:55, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Southsea

Similar question on this one. Given Portsmouth Lifeboat Station is in Southsea, could there be some confusion as to whether a separate Southsea lifeboat station existed? If it did, I wonder where is might have been. Tony Holkham (Talk) 12:29, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

I'm thinking I shouldn't have included this one, as the station still exists as Portsmouth, and the boats are included on that specific page. Likely I will delete when on PC. Ojsyork (talk) 13:11, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Former stations page

Dear All

It was never the intention to include stations on this page that are already covered in the List of RNLI stations, as its just duplicating the workload. So my apologies for deleting entries already added for Polkerris / Penzance etc. Please consider any others in this category for deletion, or alternatively, for addition for ones I may have missed.

Also, I was hoping to include some info regarding design of early boathouses, but I can't find any! If you know of anything, plmk

MartinOjsyork (talk) 20:26, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

While Polkerris and Penzance are merged into the station articles for Fowey and Penlee, they don't appear in the List of RNLI stations so I think they ought to be here in the list of former stations. They are different stations with different names. Geof Sheppard (talk) 17:00, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
      Hi Geof
I do see your point, and its something that I've thought a lot about.
Problem is, where do you stop?
Cambois, 9 previous Sunderland stations, 7 for Hartlepool, 4 at Whitby, Flamborough, Eastbourne, St Peter Port, Southsea, Hope Cove, Polkerris, Penzance, Llanelli and Pembrey, Whitehills and Banff, and maybe more, all of which are old individual stations, but all are now part of a differently named station, already with a wiki page for most.
I am worried it will just end up as a massive list of ALL the stations.
Which is why I've specifically said
This is a list of former RNIPLS and RNLI stations, but only those where the RNLI has ceased operations from that particular location, village or town.
Historic RNLI sites where the station is still in operation, but may not be at the original location, will be included in the List of RNLI stations, such as Penlee, now located in Newlyn.
(Admittedly, Penlee and Newlyn may not be a great example, maybe need to rewrite that).
      MartinOjsyork (talk) 21:54, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
I think we have mostly got it right. If a station just moved across the town, or even if it moved a few miles but kept the same name, then I don't think it would qualify for this list.
But Polkerris is a very different place to Fowey (different village on the opposite side of the headland), and Penzance is a different place to Penlee. It is several miles away across the bay, in fact Newlyn (which became Penlee) opened in 1908 but Penzance did not close until 1917. Geof Sheppard (talk) 13:40, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
I have thought about this for a while.
Fundamentally, I am actually in favour of having pages for older stations, Polkerris, Hope Cove, Penzance etc, as I'm sure there is more to tell than the odd paragraph on a current station page.
I was really just concerned with duplication.
I don't think its enough just to have an old station name, which then only links to the new station, so each old station will in time need its own page, and a tag to the current station. Equally, the current stations will need a reverse tag.
Each current station should be edited accordingly, as right now for example, there is already a significant amount of info on the Penlee page, which refers to Penzance, and its pointless having it on both.
If we can get Geof to create new pages for the older stations, and also edit the current stations, then this may have the added bonus that it will keep him so busy, that he loses the urge to rewrite all the other pages I've only just updated! :-)
          Go for it!
          MartinOjsyork (talk) 14:38, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
I think that Penzance could be split from Penlee without too much trouble, but the histories of Polkerris and Fowey are so intertwined I think they ought to stay as a single article. Geof Sheppard (talk) 16:46, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
              Hi Geof
              I'm happy either way.
Do what you think works, I'm sure it will evolve.
              Its a work in progress.
I have documentation for Winterton and Palling, so may do those.
...but no images, which leaves a page a bit bare!

Llanelli

Martin, you have a second set of dates on Llanelli (1869–1871), which I can't trace. Any clues? Tony Holkham (Talk) 16:14, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

Dates ref LBES handbook, Stations in Geographic Order.
Burry Port Lifeboat Station just shows
    Llanelli 1854-1863
    Pembrey 1863-1887
    Burry Port 1887-
but then the page was about Burry Port and not necessarily Llanelli.
But now I find a listing, Pre-533, Llanelli 1869-71, 26'3" SRP James and Elizabeth, so the second set of dates seem correct.
