About 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification

With this criteria FIFA will be start to open the entries for 2014 World Cup during the first six months of the year 2011. --Jaboolanee (talk) 03:20, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Map

Why the map isn't up to date? It should be updating after every country is eliminated. / TigerTatoo

The map has been changed every time a team gets eliminated. Wiki had an error on creating thumbnails every time that images were updated, however. Don't worry, though, the error is gone, and the map will now be updated according to schedule. Nitroxium (talk) 04:17, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Never mind, the error remains. We'll just have to be patient... The maps will be updated every time, nonetheless. Nitroxium (talk) 04:22, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
The last version is not correct, because there is no red country.Hilfemann (talk) 11:52, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
As I said, it's an error on Wikimedia's part. The maps are getting updated, but the error isn't allowing us to see the changes through the thumbnails. However, I just looked, and it seems like the error is gone now. Let's hope it stays that way.Nitroxium (talk) 18:54, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
Why someone deleted the map? It should be here. TigerTatoo
I have returned the map, though it is currently hidden until it can get updated. 199.20.68.40 (talk) 20:19, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
But why is it hidden? Can't it be shown before and after updates? TigerTatoo
It's visible now (someone else updated it). At the time I returned the map it was out of date (i.e., Japan wasn't shown as qualified), and I didn't want to show inaccurate information. 199.20.68.40 (talk) 12:44, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

The colors on the map should match the colors on the tables. The color for "Team Qualified" could be changed to a bright green. As is, the blue of "Team qualified" and the purple of "Team did not enter World Cup" are difficult to distinguish, especially at small scales (see Bhutan). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.241.240.122 (talk) 18:22, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

For the next update someone has to add Gibraltar on gray on the map. Stigni (talk) 07:05, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
Also Belarus is done playing, should be red. -- Lejman (talk) 00:33, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Goalscorers list

The goalscorers list has been eliminated. Personally I don't miss it but I'm not sure just eliminating it wihtout discussion is useful (and referring merely replacing something that has been a consistent feature of the page is hardly "vandalism").

Anyway, the options are: a) nothing at all, b) a restricted list (top-5, top-10) or c) a full list.

Personally I don't really mind but would choose option b (say top 10 only) if pushed. Jlsa (talk) 00:59, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

    I don't even see a source on there... – PeeJay 01:04, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I don't see a source on the "status of qualification" table. Jlsa (talk) 01:07, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I'd like to see the top 10 scorers in the qualification matches organized into a table, instead of listing them via columns, which I think works better when listing all goalscorers. The does (talk) 14:43, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I think option b is the best. Also, there really would be no need for citations for the goalscorers list since it's simple math and common sense, no? Nitroxium (talk) 22:50, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

List or Table?

I know The does likes the table, and Drugo Harrys changed it to a list, what does everyone else think? I personally liked the wikitable table-responsive better. Bar Code Symmetry (Talk) 01:50, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Summary of Qualification

What exactly is the point of this? It seems like very shallow information that is unnecessarily put there. At least if it would contain the next matchday, as I had done (and it was removed), then I would see the point at even looking at this chart. And even more useless is the Legend for Confederation Standings. That's not gonna change for a long time.Nitroxium (talk) 18:26, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

It's quite a useful overview of how far progressed the overall qualifying tournament is. I agree that the colours are a little unnecessary: the need for a legend adding space to the page undoes their usefulness. --Pretty Green (talk) 19:51, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
Can't we attempt to have it mention the next matchday as well? I find that as very useful information for someone who wants to find out when the matches come next quickly. I don't think it'd be that hard to update it. Nitroxium (talk) 02:34, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't necessarily have removed it, but it does insert into this article yet another feature which will require constant updating for accuracy. Why not ask at User talk:Jlsa's talk page - he/she removed it and seems to think that it has previously been discussed? --Pretty Green (talk) 20:02, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
To keep things in order, can we safely permit changes to the "Next matchday" when the last match of the confederation's day has begun? I think it is safe to assume that the "Next matchday" has served its purpose by the time the final match of the day begins. Nitroxium (talk) 06:06, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
In other words, you think qualification will have been completed while the last match is actually being played? Jlsa (talk) 06:08, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Nah, I just think that the point of the "Next matchday" is to inform readers on when the teams in such confederation is playing. Once the last match begins, the match is already being seen and the others were seen, it served its purpose. Nitroxium (talk) 06:12, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

South Sudan on the map

Since South Sudan has been a member since May 25, 2012 should we change its color on the map? It is a FIFA member now, but it didn't join. Or should we leave it as is since it was not a member at the time that qualification began? Nitroxium (talk) 04:48, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Purple is "didn't enter" - grey is "couldn't enter" just like in every other WC qual map. Nothing has changed for South Sudan. Jlsa (talk) 04:58, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Never mind, I just saw that the gray says "...or joined FIFA after the start of qualifying" Nitroxium (talk) 05:00, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

New Caledonia flag

In the section that discusses the OFC qualification, the flag shown next to New Caledonia is the French flag. Later, however, in the goals scored section, the flag that is next to the names of New Caledonian players is a separate, New Caledonian flag.

I do not have a preference as to which flag we use, but I do think we should be consistent and use the same flag for New Caledonia wherever we need it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.130.212.122 (talk) 01:41, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

New Caledonia has two official flags, the French Tricolor and the Kanak Flag. FIFA use the Kanak flag on the New Caledonia section of their website. Hack (talk) 04:32, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

"On the next matchday"

I've noticed that in every section of qualifying Dr Vicodine has been insistently against the parts that say "On the next matchday" followed by predictions on how different teams can get eliminated or qualify... Is there any specific reason as to why? I personally like the predictions and find them to be useful information. Is there some kind of rule against this? Nitroxium (talk) 04:04, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

    WP:NOR, WP:CRYSTAL, WP:SYNTH according to Dr Vicodine 89.144.192.70 (talk) 00:47, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
A comment on Dr Vicodine talk page to WP:NOR/ WP:SYNTH: " Routine calculations do not count as original research. Basic arithmetic, such as adding numbers, converting units, or calculating a person's age, is allowed provided there is consensus among editors that the calculation is an obvious, correct, and meaningful reflection of the sources " 89.144.192.70 (talk) 01:06, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
How would you go about making a consensus? Pardon my ignorance. Nitroxium (talk) 02:36, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
I agree that the calculations are "routine" enough that they should not count as being against the guidelines. I could do them myself, but I'm more than happy to let someone do them for me. I think they should stay. asimperson (talk) 08:50, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
I do not speak for Dr. Vicodine, but from looking on his talk page he appears to be citing this resolution as to why he is removing all the "on the next matchday" blurbs. 199.20.68.40 (talk) 18:47, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Highlight color table

Should a color table be put to explain why some teams are highlighted in the standings? I'm asking because I've seen something like this in the UEFA Qualifiers article, but it only explains that teams in green have secured qualification (which none have yet), but some of the group's last-placed teams are highlighted in pastel yellow, while Scotland's in pink. As far as I could grasp, the pink can only mean that Scotland can no longer qualify, despite still having matches to play. I don't get what the yellow (Macedonia, Kazakhstan, Andorra and San Marino) means, though (especially considering that Faroe is worse on the standings than Kazakhstan).

Also, in the AFC standings, Japan's highlighted in blue. I'm not sure whether that means "virtually qualified" or something of the sort, as they only need a victory to qualify as of this entry.

Shouldn't there be a table to explain these color tags in this article and the subsequent articles of each qualifying zone? 201.59.48.224 (talk) 20:53, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

I think that there should be a table in each specific article per confederation, which I think there is. Nitroxium (talk) 07:08, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
The problem is that each confederation's qualification process is different. As it stands now, they'll correspond (green = qualified already; blue = clinched at least playoff; yellow = cannot qualify directly, can still reach playoff; red = cannot qualify, still have matches to play), but even there they're going to have different meanings. Blue in OFC/CONCACAF/CONMEBOL means they qualify for at least the intercontinental playoff (in New Zealand's case, they have already), but (as of this timestamp) blue in the AFC means they've clinched at least the AFC 5th Round (the two third-place teams playing a home-and-home whose winner advances to the intercontinental playoff). I'm not sure there's a straightforward, elegant way of resolving it. 199.20.68.40 (talk) 18:59, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Additonal edit regarding Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan - Faroe Islands have played two fewer matches thus far, meaning they can still mathematically win the group. Kazakhstan don't have enough matches left to do so. 199.20.68.40 (talk) 20:27, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Qualification table

The Previous Best column may not be necessary, as past and historical performance has no bearing on current performance. For example, France's 2002 performance, while as the previous champion, France was out in the first round. Data pertaining to "previous best" can be viewed with each individual team page. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 21:29, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Additionally if the previous best column is to be continued it is very questionable to claim Bosnia-Herzegovina's previous best was 3rd at the 1930 world cup. There are 6 "successor teams" to Yugoslavia and unless Fifa has ruled specifically on the matter it is unreasonable "successor team" or not for all of them to claim Yugoslavia's past records as their own. Furthermore even if Yugoslavia's records are counted as Bosnia-Herzegovina's Fifa has established retroactively that Yugoslavia officially got 4th place in the 1930 world cup not 3rd. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.2.129.86 (talk) 00:36, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

ChrisJBenson (talk) 01:39, 5 June 2014 (UTC) replied to the comment about Bosnia and Herzegovina ...
Please note the country's name. In English, it is Bosnia and Herzegovina with no hyphen. There have been two successor teams to Yugoslavia, not six. FIFA always designates only one successor team (at most) at a time. This role was first assigned to Serbia and Montenegro. Despite ceasing to exist as a nation on 5 June 2006, they made their only World Cup appearance one week later, losing all three group games in the First Round. FIFA designated Serbia as the successor of this continuing legacy. Here is the sequence of "Yugoslavian" teams, with the actual country names in parentheses. I only considered their status in "World Cup years". Currently a World Cup year lasts three calendar years (15 June 2011 to 13 July 2014). This team did not qualify for the final stages in 1934, 1938, 1966, 1970, 1978, 1986, 1994 or 2014.

Amongst World Cup qualifiers, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia are considered separate unrelated entities by FIFA. Of current teams, only Serbia can claim that 4th (not 3rd) place finish in 1930.

In similar fashion, Russia is the sole successor of the USSR, the Czech Republic is the sole successor of Czechoslovakia, and for the World Cups between 1954 and 1990, West Germany was the sole successor of Germany. Amongst World Cup qualifiers, FIFA considers the Ukraine, Slovakia and East Germany to be separate entities unrelated to any other historical team. All other cases (among World Cup qualifying teams) are either merely national team name changes (e.g. Zaire to DR Congo), or the introduction of new teams following separatist independence (e.g. Algeria). The Republic of Ireland manages to be in both of those latter categories (formerly the Irish Free State).

I don't know if there'll be a quiz later, but if there is, I 'm ready! ChrisJBenson (talk) 01:39, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Summary of qualification

In the Summary of qualification table I assumed that the 'Qualifying end date' column should only include the last date in which a team from each respected confederation competes on. That is, 19 November 2013 for CAF, UEFA and 20 November 2013 for AFC, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC; it is not until these dates that the World Cup qualification ends for the respected confederations. User:Qed237 seems to think different. Can someone please clarify. I also suggest that we change the 'Next matchday' column to 'Qualifying start date' and include that information instead.--2nyte (talk) 16:04, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

I have been told earlier that the end of the qualification for each confederation is when the last match of the confederation qualification is played, which is not including the intercontinental playoff. Also when you in the table click on one of the confederations (for example CONMEBOL) you come to the article 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification (CONMEBOL) that states "The South American Zone of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification SAW nine teams", and to me that is information that CONMEBOL is finished. If the table then should say 20 November, that would be conflicting information, since the article says CONMEBOL is over. However I can also understand the assumption from 2nyte, and I would also like someone to clarify this and hopefully we can come up with a consensus together. QED237 (talk) 16:28, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
I can't tell the difference between what you two are saying. I think the date should be the last date a country plays a qualifying match. Within a region, that may be different. For example, within CONCACAF, the USA played its last qualifier this week, but Mexico will play in November (against New Zealand). In UEFA, England qualified this week but, for example, France will have to wait until the November play-off games. The dates for the US & England should be the October dates and the dates for Mexico & France should be the November ones. 87Fan (talk) 16:42, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
I think we know the difference, but we still are not agreeing on what date to use. Which date would you use for CONCACAF 87Fan? October (when group and CONCACAF and US finished) or November (when Mexico and intercontinental finish)? QED237 (talk) 17:01, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
The information on 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification (CONMEBOL) was changed (from current to past tense) by User:Theurgist here, though none of the other confederation articles linked in the table have been changed; I think it was just poor editing. Qualification does not end until for a confederation until all its represented teams are either eliminated or qualified. Why would you disagree with that?--2nyte (talk) 01:26, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
Technically, since we're talking about the entire conference (I thought we were talking about teams within a conference), I'd use the November date, because until November, qualifying isn't complete. Just because most teams have finished qualifying for the automatic berths doesn't mean all teams have. 87Fan (talk) 03:26, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Oribe Peralta

Are you guys sure that Oribe is the top goal scorer of all of qualification? If memory serves me right, he scored 10 goals, not 12.

    1 vs. Guyana, 12 October 2012qualification
    2 vs. El Salvador, 16 October 2012
    3 vs. Honduras, 6 September 2013
    4 vs. Panama, 11 October 2013
    5 vs. Costa Rica, 15 October 2013
    6, 7 vs. New Zealand, 13 November 2013
    8, 9, 10 vs. New Zealand, 20 November 2013

Just letting you all know before an edit is made... 216.74.240.202 (talk) 14:20, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

From what i can see you are completely right. This player has been an issue earlier with some editors giving him more goals than he has scored. QED237 (talk) 14:44, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Number of matches

Fifa.com states that 820 matches were played, not 816 as the article says (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminaries/statistics/index.html). Who is right? --IgorMagic (talk) 05:43, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

I'd say FIFA is right. Since 816 is unsourced I would say 820 with source is better. QED237 (talk) 10:13, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
The source also says that 2303 goals were scored, the article says 2334. I'd agree and say FIFA is right. Also, I don't think a source can be added in the infobox.--2nyte (talk) 11:04, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Why not, I have seen sources in infoboxes before, for example 2013–14 Premier League‎. However this source is probably not persistent and will disappear, and a better source not from FIFA (according to WP:PRIMARY would be better. Anyway I will change the numbers now. QED237 (talk) 11:10, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
An error message appears when you add a source in the infobox. I agree we should add one, but I don't think this specific infobox allows one to be put. If we can somehow then do it.--2nyte (talk) 11:31, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
You can add something into the lead and reference that. Hack (talk) 04:26, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
This is currently in the lead, with sources but not on the specific number of matches played:The originally published schedule would have consisted of 824 qualifying matches but the withdrawal of the Bahamas and Mauritius meant only 816 were required.--2nyte (talk) 04:33, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
The source for the number is just some guy's blog. Probably better to reword the section. Hack (talk) 04:39, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
