Eugenio Coșeriu (Romanian: Eugen Coșeriu, pronounced ; 27 July 1921 – 7 September 2002) was a linguist who specialized in Romance languages at the University of Tübingen, author of over 50 books, honorary member of the Romanian Academy.

In 1970 he coined the terms diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic[clarification needed] to describe linguistic variation.
Coșeriu was born on July 27, 1921, in Mihăileni, a small Romanian town that today lies in the Republic of Moldova. He attended high school in Bălți, where Vadim Pirogan and Sergiu Grossu were his classmates. After his studies at the University of Iași, he went to Italy in 1940 with a scholarship of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and continued to study at Sapienza University of Rome, where he earned his PhD in 1944 under the direction of Giovanni Maver , with a dissertation about the influence of the Chanson de geste on the folk poetry of the South Slavic peoples. In 1944–1945 Coșeriu was at the University of Padua, then from 1945 to 1949 at the University of Milan, where he a obtained a PhD degree in philosophy, under the supervision of Antonio Banfi.
Coșeriu was active at the University of the Republic in Uruguay as Professor of General and Indo-European Linguistics from 1950 to 1958. He then held visiting positions at the University of Málaga and the University of Navarra and a teaching position at the University of Coimbra. From 1961 to 1963 he was invited professor at the University of Bonn and the University of Frankfurt, after which he moved permanently to the University of Tübingen, where he held the Professor of Romance Linguistics position until his retirement in 1991.
He was elected honorary member of the Romanian Academy in 1991.
