傀 (OC *kuːl, *kʰuːlʔ) "extraordinary" (Zhouli) > 瑰 (OC *kuːl, *ɡuːl) "rare, marvelous" > a kind precious stone" (Shijing).
傀 (OC *kûi) seemingly had the same OC rhyme as 怪 (OC *kwrêh; *kwêh); they may be merely variants (Schuessler, 2007).

From Middle Chinese 傀 (MC khwojX). Recorded as Middle Korean 괴〯 (kwǒy) (Yale: kwǒy) in Hunmong Jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527.
Pronunciation edit

- Phonetic hangul: [궤(ː)/괴(ː)]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
