You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the Japanese language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. In fact, of 1,736 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 5.99% of the messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages for 126 extensions, with 2,174 messages. Many of them are used in WMF projects and they are vital for understanding the wiki. Currently 0.00% of the WMF extension messages have been translated. Translators for over 90 languages contribute their work to MediaWiki this way every month.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator privileges. Let us be aware: copyright is temporary. It only lasts during the authors lifetime and 70 years afterwards (in most countries). During those years it is limiting Wikipedia and her sister projects in showing works of art, literature, public art and buildings in countries without freedom of panorama, and more in the articles. But now a new batch is freed from copyrights!

First of all, I am sorry to write this in English.

You may already have heard about Wikipedia to the Moon: A team of scientists called the “PT Scientists” are going to send a space craft to the moon in 2017 and they want to take Wikipedia along with them. Because Wikipedia is so big, we cannot send all of it to the moon. That is why the international Wikipedia-community has voted to send all “Featured Articles and Featured Lists“ from all languages in Wiki Winaray.

“Featured Articles“ is a category in many language versions of Wikipedia that collects the very best articles in that language. Your community does not currently have a „Featured Articles“ category. Ideally, we want to take every language on Wikipedia to the moon and we also want to take the best articles in your language. That is why we would like you to tell us what the very best articles in your language are.

There are two ways you could do this:

1) You could introduce the categories “Featured Article” and “Featured List” in your language version of Wikipedia and vote for the best articles and put them in the category. We will take every article that is tagged as a “Featured Article” or a “Featured List” to the moon

2) You could vote for the best articles in your language version of Wikipedia and put them all on one a new Wikipedia page. If you let us know where we can find that list here, we will also take the articles to the moon.

The deadline for Wikipedia to the Moon is 31 October 2016. After that date, we will put all the Featured Articles and Lists onto a special disc and give it to the “PT Scientists.” They will take the Wikipedia articles into space next year.

The Wikidata development team is about to deploy a new feature on all Wikipedias. It is a new type of notification (via Echo, the notification system you see at the top right of your wiki when you are logged in), that will inform the creator of a page, when this page is connected to a Wikidata item.

You may know that Wikidata provides a centralized system for all the interwikilinks. When a new page is created, it should be connected to the corresponding Wikidata item, by modifying this Wikidata item. With this new notification, editors creating pages will be informed when another editor connects this page to Wikidata.

This feature will be deployed on May 30th on all the Wikipedias, excepting English, French and German. This feature will be disable by default for existing editors, and enabled by default for new editors.

This is the first step of the deployments, the Wikipedias and other Wiki projects will follow in the next months.

Hello everyone on the Waray-Waray Wiki Winaray. I am Cyberpower678, an administrator on the English Wikipedia and a bot operator. I have come here to ask if the Waray-Waray community would welcome m:InternetArchiveBot and/or the tools that come with it. Before just asking the question, I will offer some background on the bot and the motifs for deploying this onto other wiki.

What is InternetArchiveBot?

InternetArchiveBot is a very sophisticated bot designed for the sole purpose of combating the ongoing problems of links dying. The bot is able to fully autonomously crawl through Wikipedia's article space and analyze links, that are formatted in various methods, and appropriately modify the wiki markup to preserve the sources used on articles. It uses a very reliable algorithm to determine if sites are dead or not. In addition to the advanced algorithms used to parse reference formatting, and checking websites, the bot is highly configurable to suit the needs of the wiki. I will touch more on this later. However, the bot does not have to be fully autonomous. IABot comes with a bunch of tools that editors can use, which can be found here. These tools let users report bugs found with the bot, help the bot improve it's reliability by letting users report issues with the bot's link checking abilities, finding more suitable archives the bot should use, and most importantly, provide tools where users can run the bot on a single page immediately as well queue the bot on a collection of user specified pages. So if the fully autonomous is not desired, these tools can still be a way to allow users to combat link rot.

Why deploy InternetArchiveBot?

The IABot project was started when the community wish list survey of 2015 had a proposal to introduce a global bot to repair broken links. The proposal made number 1 on the wishlist and thus this Phabricator ticket was created. This ticket is to track if there is consensus and it's deployment progress on this wiki. As of June of 2017, this project hit the 2 year mark in its development.

About InternetArchiveBot

IABot uses intelligent algorithms to parse wiki text as humanly as possible. That means it will handle formatting differently when inside tags, as compared to when outside. It's able to detect citation templates and handle those correctly. When inside a reference, provided this Wikipedia uses them, IABot adds {{wayback}} or equivalent appropriate archive templates to plan external links. For unbracketed, or untitled external links, it can convert those to citation templates. When outside of references, IABot can directly replace the external link with an archive URL to avoid disrupting the final rendering of the article. It can still handle citation templates normally. IABot avoids editing URLs inside unknown templates, or URLs hidden inside and HTML comment tags. IABot maintains a massive database of URL metadata that helps it to efficiently do its job. The tools mentioned above can also access this database, where users can immediately fix any issues they discover that IABot will then immediately make use of. Essentially the bot will learn as more users help it to become more reliable. The error rate is very low (<0.01%) of the edits are error prone.

Different configurations of IABot

As mentioned above, IABot is very configurable to suit the wiki as needed. IABot is {{nobots}} compliant, and offers a run page in case of malfunction. Because different language Wikipedias have different cultures and work methods, this ideology was considered during IABot's initial development. When IABot is making its run, it can be instructed to make the needed fixes on the main article and report those changes to the talk page. Alternatively, the talk messages can be switched off, or the bot can be instructed to only leave talk messages alerting editors to dead URLs it found on the respective article. IABot can proactively add archive URLs to all URLs, including the non-dead, or simply restrict its changes to the URLs tagged as dead, or even URLs it sees as dead that are untagged. IABot can be instructed to restrict its operations to only links inside tags or the entire article. A complete description of InternetArchiveBot, including the configuration options can be found at m:InternetArchiveBot.

The big question

Would InternetArchiveBot, and/or its tools be a welcomed addition to the German Wikipedia? Keep in mind that if the bot's full autonomy is not desired that these tools exist to give user control over the bot operation. Here are some examples. These are edits made using the single page analysis tool mentioned above. The tool offers some options that are not available when summoning the bot. These options override the wiki set configuration the bot uses when running. Logically these options can be set for single page edits since the edit is made from the user account directly and they are responsible for the edit. Such disruption is harder to manage when the bot is being executed on a collection of pages with disruptive options.

During Wiki Hackathon 2016, the Discovery team worked on one of the items on the 2015 community wishlist, namely enabling searching the archive of deleted pages. This feature is now ready for production deployment, and will be enabled on all wikis, except Wikidata.

Right now, the feature is behind a feature flag - to use it on your wiki, please go to the Special:Undelete page, and add &fuzzy=1 to the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=1. Then search for the pages you're interested in. There should be more results than before, due to using ElasticSearch indexing (via the CirrusSearch extension).

We plan to enable this improved search by default on all wikis soon (around August 1, 2017). If you have any objections to this - please raise them with the Discovery team via email or on this announcement's discussion page. Like most Mediawiki configuration parameters, the functionality can be configured per wiki. Once the improved search becomes the default, you can still access the old mode using &fuzzy=0 in the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=0

Please note that since Special:Undelete is an admin-only feature, this search capability is also only accessible to wiki admins.

Hello everyone, My name is Marc Miquel and I am a researcher from Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). While I was doing my PhD I studied whether an identity-based motivation could be important for editor participation and I analyzed content representing the editors' cultural context in 40 Wikipedia language editions. Few months later, I propose creating the Wiki Cultural Diversity Observatory in order to raise awareness on Wikipedia’s current state of cultural diversity, providing datasets, visualizations and statistics, and pointing out solutions to improve intercultural coverage.

I am presenting this project to a grant and I expect that the site becomes a useful tool to help communities create more multicultural encyclopaedias and bridge the content culture gap that exists across language editions (one particular type of systemic bias). For instance, this would help spreading cultural content local to Waray-Waray Wikipedia into the rest of Wikipedia language editions, and viceversa, make Waray-Waray Wikipedia much more multicultural. ESEAP Conference 2018 is a regional conference for Wiki communities around the ESEAP regions. ESEAP stands for East, Southeast Asia, and Pacific. Taking place in Bali, Indonesia on 5-6 May 2018, this is the first regional conference for the Wiki communities around the regions.

Full scholarships are subject to quotas, maximum two people per country and your country is eligible to apply, visit this page.

We also accept submissions of several formats, including:

• Workshop & Tutorial: these are presentations with a focus on practical work directed either to acquiring a specific skill or doing a specific task. Sessions are 55 minutes led by the presenters in a classroom space suitable for laptops and work.
• Posters: A2-size format to give news, share your community event/program, set out an idea, propose a concept, or explain a problem. The poster itself must be uploaded to Wiki Commons with a suitable license.
• Short Presentation/Sharing talks: 10-15 minutes presentation on certain topic.
