Jain caves on top of the Hill in Vellore (‘Heritage of India in its pinnacle! A glorious past!’)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This set of rock-cut caves is located in the Vellore district in Tamil Nadu (It is near the place where I live and have visited it a few times). It is situated on a small hillock with rocks and boulders, the various writings and statues are carved out of it. The caves have been constructed by skilled artisans using traditional tools during the 8th to 9th centuries. Historic records show the caves were completed around 870 AD. It was built as a Jain shrine to the Digambar sect in the pre-Mauryan period by the Satavahana dynasty.

The various images of the Jain Gurus, the ‘Tirthkaras’ are visible etched to the stone walls. The various yogic postures depict the possibility of Yogasana being performed even in those days. The style of carvings is similar to Badami cave temples and relatable to Ajanta and Ellora caves as well. Nevertheless, it is a marvelous structure and is a fascinating fact at how accurately the stone has been carved; given the lack of machinery at that time. It is truly a feat of patience and skill, and hence a must-visit for everyone!

(P.S: The sad fact is that it is not very well preserved, and some chunks of the rock-bearing inscriptions have been stolen, damaged or misplaced. Although the site is under the protection of the ASI, I honestly feel more efforts to preserve this site must be taken, and fast.)
