Description

La façade principale de la villa Borghèse

Scipion Caffarelli Borghèse, neveu du Pape Paul V fit élever, en 1613, la villa Pinciana (devenue la villa Borghèse) par l'architecte Flaminio Ponzio puis par l'architecte Giovanni Vasanzio.

Associant les trois arts (sculpture, peinture et architecture) à la Nature, la Villa Pinciana a fondé un style nouveau pour l'époque : le baroque romain ; à ce titre elle était célèbre dans toute l'Europe.

La Villa a été construite pour être une galerie d'exposition d'oeuvres d'art antique et baroque, commandées ou acquises par le Cardinal. Elle est composée de deux avant-corps à tourelles associés à un portique surmonté d'une terrasse. A l'arrière-plan, la façade est ornée de niches et d'oves abritant des statues. L'entrée s'effectue par un grand escalier à double volée.

La Villa comportait également une bibliothèque, un cabinet de curiosités, un vaste jardin avec des statues, des fontaines et des plantes rares, une exploitation agricole, des pigeonniers, une volière, un jardin zoologique, une glacière, un espace pour la culture du ver à soie,..

La Villa était conçue comme un "Théâtre de l'Univers" ce que souhaitait le Cardinal.
