అమెరికా సంయుక్త రాష్ట్రాల రాజ్యాంగం ప్రకారం ఆ దేశ అధ్యక్షుడు ప్రభుత్వానికి అధిపతి.
కార్యనిర్వహణ శాఖ అధినేతగా, ఫెడరల్ ప్రభుత్వాధినేతగా గల అధ్యక్ష పదవి అమెరికాలో అత్యున్నతమైన పదవి. అమెరికా అధ్యక్షుడు అమెరికా సంయుక్త రాష్ట్రాలలోని సైనిక బలగాలకు కమాండర్ ఇన్ ఛీఫ్ గా వ్యవహరిస్తారు. ఈ అధ్యక్షుని ఎంపిక పరోక్షంగా నాలుగు సంవత్సరాల వ్యవధిలో ఒకసారి జరుగుతుంది. ఈ ఎన్నిక అమెరికా సంయుక్త రాష్ట్రాలలోని హౌస్ ఆఫ్ రిప్రజెంటేటివ్స్ యొక్క ఎలక్ట్రోరల్ కాలేజి బట్టి జరుగుతుంది. అమెరికా సంయుక్త రాష్ట్రాల రాజ్యాంగం లోని 22 వ అధికరణం ప్రకారం 1951 నుండి ఒక వ్యక్తి రెండుసార్ల కంటే ఎక్కువ సార్లు అధ్యక్ష పీఠాన్ని అలంకరించరాదు. ఒకవేళ అధ్యక్షుని మరణంగానీ, రాజీనామా గానీ లేదా తొలగింపు గానీ జరిగినపుడు ఉపాధ్యక్షుడు అధ్యక్షునిగా వ్యవహరిస్తారు. అమెరికా అధ్యక్షునికి 35 సంవత్సరములు కనీస వయస్సుగా నిర్ణయించబడింది. అధ్యక్షునిగా పోటీ చేసిన వ్యక్తి అమెరికా సంయుక్త రాష్ట్రాలలో కనీసం 14 సంవత్సరాలు నివాసితుడై ఉండాలి. అతడు అమెరికాలో జన్మించినవాడై ఉండాలి.
