Français : L’Antarctique est la zone la plus froide de la planète et on a longtemps cru qu’elle échappait au réchauffement. En termes de surface englacée - à la différence de l'Arctique, une grande partie de l'Antarctique - plus de 50 % en termes de surface est resté très stable ou même a subi une légère augmentation d’épaisseur, dans la partie Est de la banquise (où les températures peuvent descendre à moins 80 degrés Celsius, soit -112 degrés Fahrenheit). Les données satellitales, comme celles de stations météorologiques au sol montrent pourtant qu’en moyenne, l’antarctique s'est réchauffé d'environ 0,12°C (0,22°F) par décennie depuis 1957, pour une augmentation moyenne totale de 0,5 degré Celsius (1°F) sur cette période. Cette image qui combine données de stations météo et satellitales, montre la géographie du réchauffement, avec une tendance au réchauffement de la partie ouest continent de 1957 à 2006 ; la couleur rouge indique les zones qui se sont le plus réchauffées par décennie. La zone orangée indique une tendance au réchauffement et les zones blanches celles où aucun changement n'a été observé. Le contour et la couleur sous-jacents du continent sont donnés par le satellite Landsat (Mosaïque d’images Antarctica ; LIMA) alors que la topographie provient du modèle numérique de terrain issu de l’imagerie radar de RADARSAT. L’étendue de la banquise dans l'océan Austral, autour du continent, a été fournie par radiométrie micro-ondes du satellite EOS (AMSR-E) à la date du 14 mai 2008 (fin de l'automne dans l'hémisphère Sud). La météorologie est particulièrement complexe sur cette zone, en raison de son immensité, de son inaccessibilité (les stations météo sont pour cette raison souvent près de la côte) et les satellites ne peuvent correctement mesurer la température au sol qu’en l’absence de nuages (qui peuvent biaiser les mesures).
