Opaque watercolor heightened with gold on paper Painting: 33.3 by 20.3cm. Leaf: 43.2 by 30cm.

Gouache heightened with gold on paper, depicting a fierce battle scene within a rocky landscape, laid down on card, borders ruled in colours and gold, framed

The present illustration is likely to depict Imam 'Ali in the Battle of Siffin in 657 AD against the army of the first Umayyad Caliph Mu'awiya's, in which the Imam is reported to have cleaved an enemy in two.
