They are the most popular bean by crop production in northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States. The beans are either eaten entirely or mashed then refried.

In South America, pinto beans are called poroto frutilla. It means "strawberry bean".

Pinto beans are a nutrient-dense legume. These beans have essential nutrients. They are good sources for protein, manganese and phosphorus. The beans are high in dietary fiber and folate.

One study showed that pinto beans can lower the levels for both HDL and LDL cholesterol.
