Open World: Type of computer game design

An open world, sometimes called a sandbox world, is a video game design point.

It describes the game as free-form, or allows the player to do quests or jobs with no relation to the plot of the game. Some examples include the Grand Theft Auto games, Arma 3, or The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
