Until after the Meiji Restoration, the area that is now Niigata Prefecture was divided into Echigo Province and Sado Province.
Niigata is next to Yamagata Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Nagano Prefecture, Gunma Prefecture and Fukushima prefecture.
