Joyce Carol Oates: American author

Joyce Carol Oates (born June 16, 1938) is an American writer.

Oates has taught at Princeton University since 1978.

Early life

Oates was born in Lockport, New York. She was raised Catholic. When she was 14 she started writing. Oates graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in English in 1960.

Career

In 1960 Oates' first novel, With Shuddering Fall, was published by The Vanguard Press. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Oates wrote several books, mostly mystery novels, under the pen names "Rosamond Smith" and "Lauren Kelly". In 2011 a book Oates wrote about her life called A Widow’s Story was published.
