Harrison Schmitt: Astronaut, geologist, politician, 12th man to walk on the moon (Apollo 17)

Harrison Hagan "Jack" Schmitt (born July 3, 1935) is an American geologist, retired NASA astronaut, university professor, former U.S. senator from New Mexico. He is the most recent living person to have walked on the Moon. As of 2023, he is also the last living crew member of Apollo 17.

Schmitt resigned from NASA in August 1975 in order to run for election to the United States Senate as a member from New Mexico. He ran as a Republican. He won his election in 1976, and he was a senator for six years, but he lost his re-election campaign in 1982.
