Gilbert Islands: Chain of sixteen atolls and coral islands in the Pacific Ocean

The Gilbert Islands (Gilbertese: Tungaru; in the past Kingsmill or King's-Mill Islands) are a group of sixteen islands in the Pacific Ocean.

It is the main group of islands in Kiribati.

They were named after British Captain Thomas Gilbert. He sailed there in 1788.
