The 2001 UK census says there were 1.2 million Black British people. They were 2.33% of the population of the England and Wales. In the 2021 census 4% of people said they were Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African. That was 2.4 million people in England and Wales.

In the past, Black British used to mean any immigrant who was not English, like British Asians, but people say that it was because of racism in England at that time.
