In 1984, Hanna resigned as Deputy Prime Minister in protest of Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling.
He retired on 14 April 2011 and was replaced by Sir Arthur Foulkes.
Hanna died in Nassau on 3 August 2021, aged 93.
