Det vart kartlagd av US Geological Survey (USGS) frå tellurometermålingar og flyfoto, 1960-62. Det vart namngjeve av Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) etter Elmer G. Worthley, ein bryolog i US Antarctic Research Program (USARP) ved McMurdo Sound, 1958-59.
