Unlike in ekibalangulo (mathematics), in physics (essomabutonde) therefore, “ekibalo” is a reference to the trio: Calculations, mathematics or science behind the operation or movement of something. So ekitambuzo is “the science, calculation or math “behind the movement of the parts of a body system or structure. The system could be any structure as a machine. We can hence talk of:

Ekitambuzo ky’omubiri (body mechanics).

Ekitambuzo ky’emotoka (the mechanics of a vehicle).

Ekitambuzo ky’ennyonyi (the mechanics of a plane).

Ekitambuzo ky’ekinyonyi (the mechanics of a bird).

This is what we mean when we talk of:

Ekitambuzo ky’omubiri gw’omuntu (the mechanics of a human body), meaning “ekibalo ekitambuza ebitundu by’omubiri gw’omuntu”, that is, the mathematics and science behind the motion of the parts of a human body as a system(ensengekera).

Ekitambuzo ky’eggaali (the mechanics of a bicycle) meaning ekibalo ekitambuza ebitundu by’eggaali ng’ensengekera, that is, the mathematics and science behind the motion of parts of a bicycle as a machine system (ensengekera).

Ekitambuzo (Mechanics)

The simple English definition of “mechanics” is “the science and mathematics required for building a system (ensengekera) of parts that bring about motion in a machine”.

In Luganda, “motion” is “okuva”, movement is continous motion, and for animals like humans it is locomotion or the act of moving called okutambula. From “okutambula” we drive the Luganda concept ekitambuzo, which is Luganda for “machanics”. Don’t confuse the concepts “ekitambulizo” and “ekitambuz0”.

When you analyse the word “ekitambuzo”, it is formed by two Luganda words, “ekibalo” ekitambuza” ebitundu by’ensengekera (The math and science that moves parts of a system).
