Introdotto dalla stagione 2003 e sponsorizzato da FedEx, azienda di spedizioni espresse, il nome Air Player è ispirato a servizi di trasporto e consegna aerei forniti dall'azienda. La scelta viene fatta tra i 3 migliori quarterback della settimana, individuati sulla base delle statistiche della loro prestazione, che vengono votati dai tifosi dal lunedì al mercoledì sul sito della lega NFL.com e quindi viene proclamato il vincitore in base alle preferenze raccolte. La FedEx dona 2.000 dollari in nome del vincitore ad un'iniziativa benefica scelta all'inizio dell'anno. Al termine della stagione, con lo stesso meccanismo, viene premiato il miglior quarterback dell'anno.
