Please take a break

Hello N. You've tagged iver 50 articles and I am having a hard time catching up. Please give me a chance to work on those you've already tagged. You would save me some time if you stop putting the bare url tags inside MI tags. You have done that a few times recently and it is much appreciated. FYI you might give fixing the links yourself a try. Just click on the word refill in the template and let the program run. If there are any left over I will come along and take care of them. Of course, you don't have to do this but running refill is easier than some people think si I thought I would suggest it. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 21:08, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi @MarnetteD: First of all, your work to fix bare urls in articles is commendable and appreciated. We may have a difference of opinion regarding the tags. I feel that if a cleanup bare urls tag is on article for a bit of time, that is okay. Other templates are often on articles for years before the matters are addressed. I also feel that having only the bare urls in place is worse than having a tag on articles regarding the bare urls, because then at least pages are marked as needing attention. FWIW, I typically only tag 20 to 40, and sometimes around 50 at a time, after which I usually move on to something else. Please be aware that there is a small group of dedicated editors that fix the bare urls routinely on tagged pages, including, but not limited to Mdaniels5757, Jmertel23, Capewearer. There are more, but I'd have to go into my contribution history more and check in on articles I have tagged. I have fixed hundreds, and likely now, thousands of pages using reFill and Reflinks, but it is burdensome because these programs keep logging me out when I use them, and I tire of having to check this and then log back in when it occurs. North America1000 08:14, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Hello again N. I was dealing with several things at once yesterday and was just trying to clean up the cat before dealing with heading to an appointment. Some other parts of your post baffle me. Just because some tags stay on articles for years does not mean that we have to leave the bare url ones on the article per WP:OTHERSTUFF. I am also well aware of the other editors who work cleaning bare urls up though I'm not sure how many of them monitor the category. The logging off problem has been fixed after last weekends update to the tool so I hope it no longer happens to you. OTOH when I see an article that you tagged that has one ref bare and it turns out to be a dead link I know you didn't check it. I do think it is fun how the grouping of the articles you tag occurs - yesterday was cheese and I started drooling as I worked my way through them :-P In case you didn't see it MB did start this thread Wiki talk:Twinkle#bareurls tagging so if you have anything to add please feel free to do so. I hope you are well and that you and yours are safe. I also hope that you have a pleasant weekend. MarnetteD|Talk 15:45, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Ping / Poster

Hey Northamerica, I twice managed to screw up the ping, Thought you'd like to know I took the Covid-19 image from your userpage whilst trying (and failing) to credit you,
If I can help spread the message to absolutely anyone and everyone I absolutely will and I thank you for taking the initiative to use this image as it's not something that crossed my mind so thank you,
I hope you and yours are safe and well during these strange and unprecedented times,
Take care, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 19:32, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Davey2010: No need to credit me, I didn't upload the image, and it was authored by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The file was uploaded to Commons (here) by User:Premeditated there. At any rate, thanks for the kind words and for spreading the word about health matters. People need to stay as safe as possible during these challenging times. North America1000 07:18, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Northamerica, You're welcome, I sort of get frustrated when people take my stuff and don't bother crediting me and so passing it off as their own work .... so I didn't want to take all the credit when it was your fantastic and brilliant idea :),
I absolutely agree, Unfortunately too many people have lost their lives to the virus as it is so if I can in some way stop or reduce that with this message then I absolutely will :),
Anyway stay safe mate, Take care, Kind Regards, –Davey2010Talk 12:44, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Northamerica1000, Can you take a look at this: [5], please? I noted that you voted to keep Lapwing Publications in 2014 (I've recently improved that article a bit, but it still needs work to be done on it). Now the article about another Irish press, SurVision Books and Magazine is in danger. I would appreciate it if you could take a look and maybe vote. Cheers.--Bonmot (talk) 23:41, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Nomination of Little Greek Restaurants for deletion

northamerica1000/Archive 102

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Little Greek Restaurants is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wiki's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wiki: Articles for deletion/Little Greek Restaurants until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. HighKing++ 20:36, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Thexyz

northamerica1000/Archive 102

Hello, Northamerica1000. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Thexyz".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! UnitedStatesian (talk) 15:27, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

  • Nb. I did not start or create the page. I simply moved it from User:Ymoz/Thexyz to Draft:Thexyz and then formatted it per the move, back in July 2017. North America1000 19:39, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Undisplayable image

I found a fair-use file File:System Information (Mac) Screenshot.png that might be far too small to be considered representable, due to the illegibility of certain words. I believe the file should be increased manually to 480px and given the "{{non-free no reduce}}" tag to make all of the words at least a bit legible. Right now, the third-to-last words cannot be readable such that I can judge the System Information features on a Macintosh computer without exiting Wikipedia to other sites to find a similar screenshot with System Information on it. The closest I could get for those words is "RATASRATA Express" (case-sensitive), but these words do not make any sense to me in regards to trying to judge the System Information feature of the Macintosh computer. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 23:11, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Also, while writing this message, I was about to talk to Ronhjones, but I realized that he has been inactive since about a full 12 months ago, so it is likely that he has quit Wikipedia as of now. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 23:12, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
@Qwertyxp2000: It's a very low quality image, and may not be worth enlarging. When enlarging it, the text is even blurrier, although it is a bit easier to make out the text. I don't really want to become involved in this, and Wikipedia does not have a great deal of places to make such requests. However, there is Wiki: Requested pictures, which does have a Posting a request section which may be of assistance. North America1000 05:34, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Well, you could try un-deleting the first image pre-DatBot and then you could manually resize the old image to 450px. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 05:54, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
@Qwertyxp2000: Yeah, but I'm going to leave it alone. The resolution information at the "Minimal usage" § "Minimal extent of use" criteria of WP:NFCCP is rather explicit, and I don't feel like bucking it, or performing actions that could poentially be interpreted as copyright infringement or riding the grey line area of copyright infringement. This is also in part because when opening the image from the File:System Information (Mac) Screenshot.png page, despite that it states "No higher resolution available" on the page, the image is nevertheless enlarged when open on its own. North America1000 08:12, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Well, I guess nobody is really gonna copy that screenshot anyway for purposes besides viewing on Wikipedia, wouldn't it? I don't see a problem with making that bit more legible to read that bit of text, maybe 400px, but maybe that's enough to only just see that bit of illegible writing when zoomed in very closely. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:30, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
You could also temporarily undelete one of the images for less than 5 minutes so that you could download that image yourself, so that then you can use any image editor app to manually minimize to 450px or 400px or whatever suitable readjustment. That way, only you would probably be able to view that old revision of that certain image, which means it would be hardly visible to many people anyways. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:34, 18 April 2020 (UTC) Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:35, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
I think enlarging it, even to 400px, may be excessive, and potentially go against non-free content policies at Wiki: Non-free content criteria. Readers can still access a larger image going to the File:System Information (Mac) Screenshot.png page and then selecting (clicking on) the image. Sorry, but I am not going to become involved in this matter. North America1000 12:14, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Wiki: Arbitration/Requests/Case/Portals Closed

Notice

An arbitration case regarding Portals has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  • BrownHairedGirl is prohibited from editing in the Portal: namespace or engaging in discussions about portals anywhere on Wiki English. She may appeal this restriction in six months.
  • BrownHairedGirl is indefinitely restricted from interacting with or commenting about Northamerica1000 anywhere on Wikipedia, subject to the ordinary exceptions. This restriction may be appealed in six months.
  • For numerous violations of basic policies and generally failing to meet community expectations and responsibilities as outlined in Wiki: Administrators#Accountability and Wiki: Administrators#Administrator conduct, BrownHairedGirl is desysopped. She may regain the administrative tools at any time via a successful request for adminship.
  • The Arbitration Committee recommends that a well-publicized community discussion be held to establish a guideline for portals. The committee further recommends that this RfC be kept open for at least 30 days, be closed by a panel of 3 uninvolved administrators, and at a minimum address the following questions:
    • Topics: How broad or narrow should a topic area be for it to sustain a portal?
    • Page views: Should there be a minimum number of page views for a portal to be considered viable? How should those page views be measured?
    • WikiProjects: Should portals be required to be connected to an active WikiProject or other group of maintainers?
    • Updates: How often should a portal be updated?
    • Automation: Can automated tools be used in the creation or maintenance of portals?
    • Links to portals: How should portals be used? Should they be linked on all relevant Wikipedia articles, or should another method be used to ensure that portals are viewed and used?

For the Arbitration Committee, SQLQuery me! 21:55, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Archiving

Hello! As a part of Clean up project I have noticed that you archive the fixed tasks. I would also like to archive some messages on my talk page for more convenient use. Can you please teach me? If there's some guideline I can use, I'll be grateful. Thank you! Less Unless (talk) 18:13, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

  • Hello Less Unless: Sure, I could help you out with this. The easiest way is for me to simply set it up for you on your talk page. Then you can begin to use it. Regarding guidelines, there's some information at Help:Archiving a talk page and WP:TALKCOND. If you'd like for me to set it up for you, just let me know. North America1000 19:20, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
Northamerica1000 Please set it up for me. I'm not very technical, sometimes it's just takes too much time. But I will read the guidelines to have a better vision. Less Unless (talk) 19:53, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
      • Hello Less Unless: northamerica1000/Archive 102  Done. I set it up with a few archive pages. When one page gets full, then you can start on the next one. A good rule of thumb is to use WP:TALKCOND as a guide for when to start using a new archive page, which uses 75KB as a cutoff for an archive page. North America1000 21:49, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello

Sorry to bother you, mate! Do you consider restoring Superkombat Fighting Championship please? It was the Promotion-of-the-Year in Kickboxing in 2011, beating Ultimate Glory (eventual Glory) and It's Showtime of the Netherlands (formerly No. 1 in Europe for years). Rico Verhoeven, Roman Kryklia, Benjamin Adegbuyi, Mladen Brestovac, D'Angelo Marshall and Ismael Londt fought in SUPERKOMBAT, 6 out of top 10 heavyweights [on the list. And the list can continue, No 2 light-heavyweight Pavel Zhuravlev, No 1 middleweight Alex Pereira (kickboxer), No 4 middleweight Jorge Loren, No 5 middlweight Yousri Belgaroui, No 7 middleweight Igor Bugaenko etc My arguments are very valid! .karellian-24 21:24, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello .karellian-24: I notice that you have already contacted Spartaz on their user talk page, the administrator who deleted the page and related pages. I also notice that Spartaz has not replied to you yet there. It is typically best practice to confer with the deleting administrator in requesting undeletion. One reason for this is that I had no real involvement in the deletion discussion, other than performing routine deletion sorting posts. It is also possible that Spartaz may simply need more time to respond to your request. Another option, if you don't get a response, is to go to WP:REFUND, although this venue is typically for articles whose deletion discussions have received little or no input. North America1000 13:19, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
.karellian-24: There's also Wiki: Deletion review, which is actually a better choice compared to WP:REFUND relative to this situation. North America1000 03:46, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Zul Ariffin

Hello. I wonder if I could trouble you to take a quick look at the edit history of Zul (and its Talk page), Zul Ariffin (actor), and Zul Ariffin. —BarrelProof (talk) 03:02, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

It looks like you stopped editing a few minutes before I posted that comment. I may take it somewhere else. —BarrelProof (talk) 03:40, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
@BarrelProof: Before going into a detailed synopsis of the history of the Zul article, it would be nice to know what you are looking for, and since you can access its Revision history yourself, you may be able to answer your own question per the following information:
      • Zul Ariffin (actor) – You created this page as a redirect to Zul on 3 May 2020. On 4 May 2020, another user changed the page's content into a biographical article about Zulkifli bin Ariffin. You then reverted that edit, changing it back to a redirect page. The page was then deleted by Iridescent per WP:G6, with a rationale of "This redirect is a remnant of an undiscussed page move that took place following the replacement of an article about a completely different topic, which was an attempt to recreate an article that had previously been deleted and blocked from being created again. I recommend blocking this title from being created again, like the base title Zul Ariffin."
      • Zul Ariffin was created on 7 May 2017 as a biographical article about Zul Ariffin. As you can see by selecting the red link for this page, it was deleted on 14 May 2017 per WP:BLPPROD, speedy deleted per WP:G4 on 13 July 2019, and again speedy deleted on 30 July 2019 per WP:A7 and WP:G4.
      – I'm rather busy with other matters, so hopefuly this helps you out. I'm not sure that I really want to become deeply involved in this matter. North America1000 05:52, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for responding, and sorry for the distraction. After the action taken by Iridescent, the situation seems to have quieted down. It might be nice if Zul Ariffin (actor) is blocked from being created again, but the issue seems to have gone away for the time being. —BarrelProof (talk) 16:20, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Little Greek Restaurants

I'm confused about what happened in the creation process. It says you added it as an article, but in the talk page it says "This article was accepted on 27 May 2012 by reviewer Mindsparkconsulting (talk · contribs)" who was also the person creating the contents. Does this mean it was drafted and approved by the same person? Graywalls (talk) 01:02, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

@Graywalls: The article was moved to main namespace on 11 June 2012‎. Being almost eight years ago, I don't remember if the AfC helper script was used or not, but it is not denoted in the Revision history. It appears that I initially made an error and moved the article into Wikipedia namespace, which would occur by not selecting the correct namespace on the left side of the page when using the move page function. So, this was quickly corrected within one minute. The article was initially created by Mindsparkconsulting at Talk:Little Greek Restaurants (link). I later moved the article to the article page from the talk page. This can all be discerned by checking out the talk page's Revision history here and the article's Revision history here. However, I will get back to you about all of this after I have time to give it my full attention and perform some research. North America1000 13:22, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

    • @TonyTheTiger: I may have to bow out from working on a new article. Mycology is not really a specialty of mine, and I am interested in working in other areas at thie time. For starters, Google Scholar has some content about Fusarium Spp (example). Many source searches, such as in Google Books, are providing information relative to Nature's Fynd. I also notice that the Nature's Fynd article is presently at AfD. I wonder if a new article could be created for Fusarium str. yellowstonensis from content within the Nature's Fynd article? It seems that at least this aspect of the article is WP:PRESERVE-able. North America1000 02:42, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

northamerica1000/Archive 102

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC.

Current events

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests.

Drive and blitz reports

March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020.

Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.
