Infodumping is the tendency to share an excessive amount of information about a specific topic, while going into great detail.
It is common amongst neurodivergent people, especially those with autism or ADHD. Although infodumping is often represented negatively in media, advocates suggest it can be beneficial for neurodivergent people, indicating comfort, vulnerability, or trust when sharing information with their neurotypical peers.
Infodumping sometimes results in the interests of neurodivergent individuals being labeled as “special interests" - a term now considered outdated and offensive. Neurodivergent individuals may mistake or miss non-verbal and paraverbal signals indicating the listener's lack of interest in the topic being infodumped, which can make open communication more difficult.
