The characteristic feature of hyperplastic polyps is serration at the luminal surface. They lack nuclear atypia (elliptical nuclei, hyperchromatic nuclei, nuclear crowding). These polyps are the most common type of polyp in the colon and rectum. Hyperplastic polyps are considered to be benign, i.e. they have no malignant potential. They should be differentiated from sessile serrated adenomas and traditional serrated adenomas, which both have a malignant potential. See also
