The French language is not widely spoken in Croatia, as Croatian is the official and predominant language of the country.
The decline of demand for traditional French chanson since 1990s has affected the status of French in Croatia. English is most commonly spoken foreign language, in terms of tourism, trade and the still dominant American culture which outperformed the popularity of French culture. Despite the limited presence of the French language in the country, France and Croatia have signed an agreement almost 30 years ago in order to promote and enhance cultural cooperation.
According to a survey conducted in 2019, 23% of Croatians speak French as a second language. These courses are more common in major cities and tourist destinations where the demand for foreign language education is higher.
There is an institution named Alliance Française of which is also present in Croatia.
