Alienated Land

Alienated land is land which has been acquired from customary landowners by the government, either for its own use or for private development.

The term refers historically to the appropriation of customary land by European colonial powers, such as the acquisition of customary land in the Yucatán that preceded the Caste War of Yucatán (1847-1915), in which the native Maya population rebelled against Hispanic landowners.
