O kelvin recibiu este nome en honra do físico e enxeñeiro Willian Thomson, que se tornou Lord Kelvin cando foi feito par do reino.
En canto unidade SI, o kelvin é escrito cun k minúsculo (excepto, claro, no comezo das frases) e non debe ser precedido polas palabras grao ou graos ou o símbolo °, como os graos Celsius ou Fahrenheit. Isto acontece porque estas son escalas de medición, en canto que o kelvin é unha unidade de medición. Cando o kelvin foi introducido en 1954 (na 10ª Conferencia Xeral de Pesos e Medidas, Resolución 3, CR 79), recibiu o nome de grao Kelvin e o símbolo °K; o "grao" (°) foi suprimido en 1967 (13ª CGPM, Resolución 3, CR 104).
