Matsuo Munefusa, meer bekend as Matsuo Basho (Japannees: 松尾芭蕉; 1644 – 28 November 1694) was 'n Japannese digter.
Hy is bekend as die grootste vervaardiger van haiku, 'n soort van poësie met slegs 17 lettergrepe. Vir hom was geskrewe Japannees moeilik om te bemeester, maar haiku was maklik om te skryf. Matsuo se haiku's het eienskappe van die natuur en die vier seisoene ingesluit. Die lesers moet hul verbeelding gebruik om sy gedigte te verstaan.
