| Description |
Nederlands: Repronegatief. 'Van Sabang tot Merauke'; zo begon een bekende regel. Tussen Sabang in het uiterste noordwesten en Merauke in het verste zuidoosten (Nieuw-Guinea) strekte zich in de 20e eeuw Nederlands-Indië uit. Sabang was net als Medan een jonge vestiging en pas sinds 1893 onder koloniaal gezag,. Met zijn fraaie baai en zijn kolenstation (1895) ontwikkelde het zich snel tot een belangrijke haven. In 1898 kreeg het een 2800-tons dok. Voor veel buitenlanders was Sabang de eerste kennismaking met Indië. De Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland, eigenaar van dit schip, onderhield een veertiendaagse maildienst op Indië vanuit Amsterdam. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). S.S.
