Changhua (彰化) is a city in Changhua County. The city is the seat of government for the county

Understand edit

The county of Changhua is home to the Babuza Aboriginal people. Historically, Changhua city was a base for immigrants from China and used as a staging post in various campaigns against the indigineous inhabitants. To support this, a fortress was built out of bamboo which gained the city the nickname "Bamboo Town".

The city has an area of approximately 65 km2 (25 sq mi)km and a population of around 226,744 (as of January 2023).

  • Freeway 3 intersects with Freeway 1 at Changhua and connects to Provincial Highway 74.

Get around edit

Changhua was the second city after Taipei to introduce a public bicycle rental system and now there are dozens of rental points for the YouBike program scattered around the city.

Changhua Wude Hall

Dacheng Hall of the Chunghua Confucius Temple
  • 17 Confucian Temple of Changhua (彰化孔子廟), No. 30, Kongmen Road, +886 4 723 6746. Tu-Su 08:30-17:00. The complex was constructed in 1726 with a temple and a school, although only the central structure remains.
  • 18 Kaihua Temple (彰化開化寺), No. 134, Zhonghua Road, +886 4 726 8741. It was built in 1724 as a temple to Guanyin. It has served many uses over the centuries and has been damaged and rebuilt several times during its history.
  • Yuanching Temple. Constructed in 1763, it is perhaps the first temple in Taiwan to venerate the Jade Emperor.
  • 19 Nanyao Temple (南瑤宮). Built in 1738 as a temple to Mazu, the structure has been added to since then.
