Sino-Korean word from 공화(共和) (gonghwa, “republic”) + 국(國) (guk, “country”), from an orthographic borrowing from Japanese 共和国 (kyōwakoku).

- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
